PLAYING defense is probably the most difficult thing to do in the game if your playing some one good...BUT this is how the best players in the world play D...
you have many options to try and force stops...we will start with the most basic which would be man to man...your best chance at getting a stop is to control your help side by basically running around with your PF...at your player match ups always set your center at loose because he will always be in a better position to come over on the helpside and in most cases is your tallest best shot blocker/shot alter guy on the floor...and now since your in man running around with your PF you should be doing many things. looking for lead passes (thats why you cant play on ball D unless your trying to dbl team, but if your playing on ball D your oponnent will be able to get an easy lead pass dunk probably every time if he wants, so truth be told you wont be good playing on ball D) so you got to run around contest shots and play in the passing lanes but keeping in mind wer your opponents PF is on the floor WITH YOUR PF.... fast breaks are always difficult to defend. the best way to approach a fast break is to of course stop the ball or switch right away to a half court trap that way you can stop the ball right at half court or if you oponnet throws an outlet pass or gets sloppy w/e you can get a trap on the corners and attempt to intercept the pass. after a made basket you should always set up in a half court trap...thats the only way to keep your oponnnet out of a lead pass situation to his big guys while there getting set up..your oponnet also has to be aware of that so they are going to have to force the ball wer there is pressure right in the middle of the court because thats wer your point guard will pick him up right at half court! by doing this it forces your oponnet into a half court set game...wer then you can do what i mentioned play the passing lanes and contest shots via help side with your PF... adjusting defesive pressure throughout the game is alo extreamly important.... you need to adjust that for what your oponnet is trying to accomplish offensively..if hes all paint/dunks/lead passes, then keep your d pressure at 0-20% if he is shooting all jumpers and threes jack that d pressure slider up to around 90-80...the lower your D pressure is the more "sag" you get meaning the better your help side defense is. the higher your d pressure is set the more up on the ball you will play but the less help side you strength you will get. defensive pressure: 80 - 100 - good for perimeter D low D pressure: 0 - 20 excellent paint D and help side strength thats why you see the worst defensive teams have low D pressure because they need all the help D they can get because they dont have players with high Dawar expecailly perimeter players (bucks, grizzles, wizards, etc..) and when you look at teams like spurs, pistons, bulls, etc...(good defensive teams) you will kno there d pressure by default is set really high because they have such good defesive players that they want to play up in your face and helpside has to travel further then but guys like tim duncan, ben wallace, rasheed wallace will get there quicker still because they have high Dawar! a general rule of thumb for individual defensive players is this: defence awarness stat: 78 - 99 = good 74 - 77 = ok 73 or less is bad also never ever go 2-3 zone in a game because i don't care if your using the spurs...beating a 2-3 zone is as simple as throwing from the top of the key...one pass to the wing and its a wide open 3 all game long... 1-3-1 - is good and i like using it but the only teams that can run this zone are: spurs, bulls, pistons, Celtics, for the most part because those are the good D teams that will keep all the gaps closed in the 1-3-1 scheme...i actully like to throw this in once in a while because as i said with good defensive teams all the perimeter gaps are closed and you'll alwyas have your center to contest the shot right by the basket...but most importantly it allows you to run around with your PF freely to do w/e you want..contest shots, intercept passes, on ball steals etc....this is because your PF in the 1-3-1 is the guy right in the middle of the floor, you'll see what i mean about running around freely with your PF when you r in a 1-3-1 2-3, 3-2, box and 1, all of those zones are useless and have way to many gaps or weakness to ever use no matter what team you are using, period hope this helps wrote by playbqy |
